What makes my film an animated film?
I think my film would work best as an animated film because animation is a medium that can create a world that makes sense while it is totally distant from reality. Despite the economic reasons of not shooting my story as a film, the aesthetics of a film does not match my standard. It would also look very tacky as a live action film. My story is about a girl’s journey on a train travelling through train cars with unusual scenes and environments. I think animation is the key for my story because animation with sound and music can bring the viewers in and through the environments fast. There are surreal moments in my film that would only make sense if I make my story an animation, for example-fish and floating toys in a candy shop like train car, cardboard like animals peeking behind trees in a forest, and also a girl morphing/transforming into a rabbit.
Editing outcomes:
There are many edits and changes I made from the very first version of animatic for this semester. I refer some of these changes to the reading of “Inglorious Editors- A View into the Cutting Room”. I relate a lot to the term of changing time in editing, there are points in my film that I stretched the time (freeze frame and slow motion cut) and there are other times that I compressed time to make more dynamics in the timing and also to eliminate unnecessary animating. In the article, it talks about POV shots and reaction shots which take place several times during my story. I find these shots very motivational and reveal much information that can move the story forward. In the reading, it says that every cut in the film must be motivated- it must have a reason for being in the movie which means each cut must provide the audience with information about the plot, character, location and/ or subject. If not, it should not be in the film.
In the Walter Murch’s article, I find myself inspired by this phrase:
“A lot of editing is instinctive. You feel when you are ready to cut away from a shot.”
It is similar to what Lee Unkrich said about the intuition, just sitting back and allowing to see it to play. “There is no better game than if the film feels right” (Lee Unkrich).
